Bible translation statistics often highlight around 7,000 officially recognized languages, each with an ISO code. But this only scratches the surface. There are an estimated 30,000 language variants, each representing a unique cultural and linguistic identity that isn’t captured by traditional data. We call these OMTs - Oral Mother Tongues. Many OMTs are unwritten, yet they are just as important. Each deserves an expression of the Scriptures that respects its distinct language and culture. By recognizing OMTs, we acknowledge that every spoken variant matters and ensure that every voice has the opportunity to be heard in Scripture translation.
